Thank you for visiting the site!

The Herald’s mission is to provide an informative place for news and events in the great Northwoods of Wisconsin. There will be photos of this beautiful land, recollections of the area’s colorful history, news stories and homesteading where the summers are short but sweet and the winters long and fierce.

I am Mary Ann Doyle, the ‘brainchild’ behind Harold. He first came into existence in the mid 1990s as a grassroots, homegrown newspaper. With a background in journalism I came to realize the events happening in my hometown community were worth putting on paper. A lot of people agreed.

It was a low tech endeavor with a diverse “staff” but despite its simplicity the little paper gained a faithful following. (Editor’s note: Check out the hilarious article about how The Harshaw Herald came to fruition. here:https://atomic-temporary-161697405.wpcomstaging.com/comedy-of-errors

It was an informational publication during its day with such banners as; ‘What’s Happenin’, ‘Harshaw News’, ‘Cooks Corner’, a Dear Harold advice column, off colored jokes, the ‘Culture Corner’, area business updates and horoscopes provided by the mystical and popular Madam Starbarfski. However, its primary focus was to provide a humorous perspective on living life in a unique community in the beautiful Northwoods of Wisconsin. That focus will remain the same but with today’s technology there will be so much more.

It was a sad day when life got in the way and I had to step down as editor-in-chief and Harold was no more. But as I have come to find out in the 27 years since the last edition came off the press, he has not been forgotten in the memories of his many followers and they have lamented his demise often and consistently through the years.

So after nearly 30 years, I decided to resurrect Harold. Since the focus of the Harold has always been as a community newspaper the online Harold will be no different. If you have news, events, photos, stories or articles please feel free to contact me so they can be included on this site. Contact information is on the home page.

The original Harold’s banner proclaimed “We know not what the truth is but report the news as it is told to us,” and that pretty much stands today but there will be so much more. Realize this site is a work in progress and it will grow and adapt as needed.

I’m glad you’re here. I promise it will be a fun ride!
